CONNECTING COMMUNITIES: THE FERRY BOAT TRADITION
Friday, July 24
2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Multimedia Lecture
You may know that big sailing ships once moved cargo across these waters - but what about the generations of ferry boats carrying families, livestock, vehicles, and more?
Join guest speaker Richard Thomas for a fascinating journey through that world - from the tiny wooden SS Charles Lemcke built at Lion’s Head to the mighty MS Chi-Cheemaun, side-launched from Collingwood and still sailing between Tobermory and Manitoulin Island today.
Through big-screen photographs and rare newsreel footage - including dramatic shipyard launches and multi-generational crews at the helm - Richard brings to life the vessels, the people, and the ferry boat traditions that helped shape communities along Georgian Bay and the Lake Huron coast.
This event includes a special guest musical appearance by Canadian singer-songwriter David Archibald performing Rocks of Tobermory.
Read more about the lecture event & speaker Richard Thomas here.
o Location: St. Paul’s Anglican Church Community Hall, 248 High Street, Southampton

Meet Mariners & ‘Characters’ Of Southampton Past
This passport to history invites you on a stroll around Fairy Lake, where you'll encounter intriguing figures from this oldest port on the Bruce coast.
Step back to 1855 and meet John Brown, the determined stone mason who braved the elements to build the lighthouse on Chantry Island. Learn what it took, what it cost, and why the design is so functional and timeless.
Encounter Duncan McGregor Lambert and Louisa Emily Jowett in the 1860s, the island’s first lighthouse keepers. How did they live offshore, keep the lamp burning, and still raise eleven children?!
Jump to October 7, 1907 - one night, two shipwrecks! Join Captain Frank Granville of the doomed sailing ship Ontario and Captain Depeu of the sunken schooner Erie Stewart as they discuss what happened. Find out what links the twin disasters.
Hear from the cook of two-masted ship Hunter - formerly the British HMS General Hunter from the War of 1812 - that mysteriously ran aground on Southampton’s main beach, cannon and all. Why here?
Meet Mrs. Roy Trelford and learn how weather forecasts reached the ships on Lake Huron - without use of radio. See how she and her husband communicated vital information using mid-20th century ingenuity - and wicker!

Entertainment Tent | Presented by Bruce Power
The annual Marine Heritage Festival is organized by volunteers of the nonprofit Marine Heritage Society in collaboration with many community service clubs, cultural partners, and the Town of Saugeen Shores – all to celebrate the learning and fun that make this destination such a wonderful place to live, work, play, and visit. Learn more about other MHS activities and restorations at ChantryIsland.com.
The MHS wishes to acknowledge that Bruce County is situated on the traditional and treaty territory of the Anishinabek: The People of the Three Fires, known as Ojibway, Odawa, and Pottawatomie Nations. This is the homeland of the Chippewas of Saugeen, and the Chippewas of Nawash, the traditional keepers of this land. May we all live with respect on this land and waters, in peace and friendship with all its diverse peoples.
