Discovery
Discovery of the General Hunter Shipwreck made on the beach in Southampton in 2001
Low lake levels and a spring ice scour uncovered about a dozen ship frame tips.
Local residents Dunc McCallum, Ken Rothenberg, John Rigby and Mike Sterling take a look.
HMS General Hunter captured by the U.S in the “Battle of Lake Erie” in 1813 and wrecked on Southampton Beach on August 19th, 1816.

Artifacts from the HMS General Hunter are located in the Marine Gallery at
Bruce County Museum & Cultural Center
Royal Newfoundland Regiment and U.S. Infantry Buttons were found in the 2004 excavation between the frame of the ship.
This 1.03 meter long 90 kg, iron swivel cannon was found beside the keelson in 2002 and restored by the Canadian Conservation Institute
