July 5th.  Ken Rothenburg, Thornton Douglas and Andrew Champion start the archeological dig in the Old Privy.  They excavate a little over 25 cm and find artifacts.  Most are interesting hand made nails and some very small tools.  One bottle is labeled Parmint and it manufactured by International Laboratories.  An examination of the Internet shows that bottles of Parmint by the same company have been discovered on WWI battlefields in Europe.  The bottle on Chantry is quite small and it appears that it could be medicinal.  The small tool found almost looks like it could be used for dental use, but that is just an indication of its size more than its utility.  All the rock and debris were filtered by a screen.  Excellent compost has been discovered.  The datum line was marked in green on the inside wall.    Here is Andrew's report:

 Friday, July 5

Start Time: 9:00
Present: Andrew Champion
Thornton Douglas
Mike Sterling
Ken Rothenberg

Began dig in privy at a starting point of 27" below main floor frame.

bottle found on Friday once contained parmint a product of
International Laboratories. Although the use of parmint
is unknown, it has also been found on a WWI battlefield.

Current Depth: 13" from datum

In the afternoon we ran two tours for 9 and 10.  Again lots of people from the USA and all from out of the area... good news for our merchants, hotel and B&B people, I think.  This hits one of our original goals head on.... that is, an environmental site with small groups that do well in the community.  The Captain was Carl Crymble, crew Vicki Tomori and Dan Nolan.  Mike and   Andrew continued to work on the Island.  Total hours 38.

July 10th 2002.  Thornton Douglas, Andrew Champion, Mike Sterling, Sarah and Amy (two 15 year old girls who came on the tour the day before and wanted to volunteer today) and Roy Allen went to the Island.  Mike, Andrew, Thornton worked on the dig out of the privy as described above while Roy and Mike worked on the brick work of the building.  The girls helped too and did some weeding along with soil recovery from the pit screening.  Highlights of the day was another bottle, this time chocolate coloured.  Also the opening at the back of the privy was fully exposed and it is about 13x14" and very neatly done.  There is a flat stone outside on the south wall below the opening.  Lot's of debris is there and a good source of soil.  We can work there for a long time.  Thornton found a little ornate metal door that probably covered the opening and allowed the Keeper to gain access to the compost from the privy.

August 7th, 2002 We spent all afternoon getting the old dock back from the rocks between PE and Southampton while Gord Webb, Andrew Champion and Joan Rigby ran 3 tours. It was wedged tightly by the storm last week. John Holman, Joe, Bob and I went on the Tilbury to get it, but Bob's shoulder was so bad that he could only wait on pins and needles out on the Tilbury bobbing on the windswept water. Try as we might we could not move it. Along came Anne Holman and she got in the water up to her waist too, but to no avail Along came Carol, Anne's sister and up to her waist she went.... then along came Dave Mills from his house on the bay and up to his waist he went... then along came Marge, his wife, and up to her waist she came, but again and again to no avail.

We all went in search of levers (Archimedes again) and huge trees and solid steel flag poles and much huffing and puffing finally edged inch by inch the big dock off the rocks. (Note no reference to metric measurements here at all!)

Once floating we had to get her back to the Island with the rising wind and huge rocks that were in our way. After an hour of towing we finally made it, but broke our tow line once on the way.

Once on the Island we locked the dock to the others cheek to cheek and did a few rows of Privy bricks for good measure. If we would have stayed another hour on the rocks, the whole of Southampton would have been there huffing and puffing and jabbering away in cooperation.

SHIPWRECK IN LAKE HURON.

A correspondent at Southampton, writing on the 16th inst. Informs us that between that port and Cape Hurd a considerable quantity of stuff has come ashore, such as flour, cranberrys &c.  Mr. Donald McAuley, of Southampton, and his brothers, being out in their boat, picked up a cannon, in 8 feet of water, weighing 4,900 lbs.  They also found 2 pails, with “Illinois” marked on them. Quantities of various kinds of furniture have also come ashore, and the supposition of course is that some sailing vessel or steamer has been wrecked in the late gales.

The brothers McAuley having proceeded some distance up the lake shore, a violent gale came on one night at 12 o’clock, and they went down with lights to the shore to secure their boat, when they heard shouting from the lake.  They made all sorts of signals to those from whom the sounds  proceeded, to come ashore, but without effect and the McAuley’s accordingly made their way out through the broken ice with their boat until they found an Indian boat upset, and clinging to it two men and a woman and three children, who were on the verge of perishing, the sea was rolling over them, and none of them were able to stand on their feet when taken into the McAuley boat.  They lost their boat and its cargo and before getting to shore the McAuley’s lost their boat also, which was dashed against the rocks and went down, they got safely to shore themselves however along with the Indians whom they had rescued from a water grave.

While not a single organism algal bioherms do present that appearance.
This is enough for me to finally get the article on the calcite
occurrances finished.

Thank you for the continuing updates.

A Very Merry Christmas to you, your family, and to the members and
families of the Chantry Island crew who gave us a most enjoyable and
informative tour.

Hi Liz,

I received 2 out of the 3 images, but that's enough to go on for now.
Unfortunately, I'm on sabbatical and don't have all my references to
hand, so this will just a preliminary account. I'll try to follow up
when I'm briefly back at the ROM in a couple of weeks.

You are right on the money in terms of identifying the unit (Detroit
River Formation) and likely facies ("Formosa biohermal B" - reefal or
reef flank phases). The grey gnarly stuff should be dolostone, rather
than limestone, which should be easy enough to confirm. What I can see
of the texture suggests that the unbedded carbonate might be made up of
fragments of calcareous algae (especially if closer examination reveals
a kind of jumbled, platy composition).  Thus, the circular structures
appear to be the eroded remnants of small algal bioherms...rather like
mini-atolls...that formed on/within a laminated organic-rich lagoonal
facies (should also be dolostone), possibly located between larger
stromatoporoid-coral reefs of typical "Formosa" aspect.  More recent
lakeshore erosion has probably exaggerated the atoll-like appearance
through plucking of the central mass, leaving just the flanking rims
standing in relief.  If the rims are vuggy and contain abundant
crystalline calcite, it seems reasonable to assume that they were
originally more porous and more susceptible to diagenetic dolomitization
than the cores, which would also contribute to their differential
preservation.

One of the refs you could check for general background info on the
Detroit River Fm would be Liberty & Bolton 1971 - Geological Survey of
Canada, Memoir 360 (Paleozoic Geology of the Bruce Peninsula Area,
Ontario).  There are also a couple of GSC publications on the Formosa
reef fauna (bulletins, I think) by Fagerstrom, also in the 70's.
Telford & Uyeno produced a more recent (mid-80's) GSC bulletin on the
Devonian of SW Ontario.  Sorry I can't remember details of the latter
references - try looking in the OGS Geology of Ontario volume for
additional sources.

Hope this is OK for now.  I'll get back to you in about 2 weeks.

Regards,

Dave
