January 30th, 2001. I went to Owen Sound with Mike Goodwin to reserve a keyboard for the Songfest and later visited Bill Robinson. See the record of that experience below: Total hours 5.
Over the past two years, I've worked with Bill Robinson of Tara. Bill is a master stonemason. He, of course, was our expert on the stone work on the Island. In the winter time he works on freighters that moor in Owen Sound for the winter. Today I visited him on a 730 foot monster ship. Since the 1966 he has been doing refit on these giants of the Great Lakes once winter would damage his mortar. It was quite an experience to be on such a ship. They are of course large, but the scale of things is beyond belief. This ship, built in 1960 does grain hauling and is moved each year at the end of the season to Owen Sound for repair. The holds are large enough to put our house here in Southampton and another one too in each hold and more. The ship runs on steam and the apparatus to accomplish that job is really something. Bill was deep in depths of the ship.. He was working on the the ballast tanks that run all along the starboard and port sides. They needed repair. Water is pumped into them to steady the ship when one of the giant holds is loaded lest the ship turn turtle or tilt. Water floats the ship, but it also creates its arteriosclerosis too. Rust is everywhere. When I reached Bill down many, many feet of ladder and squeezing thru shafts and hatches not meant for normal use, the atmosphere was like a London fog, but the fog was from the rust brought up into the mist and murk of the ship. Bill appeared in an outfit of leather, tan leather that was rust soaked. He squeezes into spaces that sometimes require him to strip to his skivvies to reach. Once there he must rip and tear and weld and repair. I have great respect for this man. He has a good face, a good heart and his gruff way is engaging. He does real work.

They filmed real work going on at the Island. It was interesting because two women who had rented a place at Higgin's Landing asked to come. They wanted to know what to wear, "eyeing me warily". I gestured, hypnotically, like Mandrake the magician toward my outfit. They asked where the local Salvation Army Store was! So much for that. Anyway, they did come with bright eyes and did lots of work which the crew filmed. The program will air next year. They seemed very organized.

We got it to work, but it's too small for the job giving only about 1 gal per minute. Mike carrying pails must be 1/2 of a horse because he can do twice as much in the same unit of time if you give him at least 5 minutes. Strangely, he can do 10 gallons in 5 minutes, but cannot do 1 in 1 minute. Such are the mysteries of numbers. Total hours 24.

Giles Roy and Peter McGuire do the welding. The key items here are to seal the deck to a height of 12 inches and to add scuppers to drain any water. We also had to add rails all around to a height of 39.37 inches. The cabin has a 12 inch high step into it now and all around seals. The batteries have been moved and the engine sealed too. Bill Price got us rubber gasket material for use as a deck seal and using calk and many new screws, sealing has been accomplished. The inspector, looking at the boat mid-way in the work thinks we will have the best boat on the Bruce and certainly the only boat in Saugeen Shores that can pass the rigid tests now required due to the sinking at Tobermory. Our Tilbury motor konked out due to lack of oil injection and was sent back for warrenty. Lots of work on the Island too with Joan Rigby, the Holman's and Ernestine Perkins doing work. Willie tried to get the barge and big shovel back, but had to go aground at South Street due to the wind and climb off with the heavy equipment. The Peerless had no problems. Bob Trelford, Mike Sterling, Gord Webb and Ali McKinnon. Total time 10 hours.
