The Longdock

    This aerial view was taken in 1919.  It shows the panorama of Southampton's Harbour of refuge at that time.  Both the Long and Short dock are visible along with the navigation "gap".  One can see that this gap could be a daunting navigational problem in itself.  The gentle curve of the short dock was clearly designed to provide shelter for docking ships.
