The Fresnel Lens
The Fresnel lens was invented in 1822 by a Frenchman named Augustine Fresnel. The lens works by bending the light waves radiated from the light source spherically and then focusing the light on a single plane (the horizon). That is, it takes the light generated by a source that emits it in a spherical glow and changes the direction to a thin sheet.
