September 19th, 2000.  We took a massive  load of sand to the Island today because the masons were going to work in the basement and this requires lots of mortar for chinking the rubble walls.  Daryl, Bill, Mike, Mike  Goodwin, Ian Evans, Mike Sterling and guest Hart Doran went to the Island.  The masons started work and Mike Goodwin and Mike Sterling moved the sand up to the work site.  We then loaded excess scaffolding back off the Island via the Tillbury Boat and the Peerless.  When Ian Evans and Mike Sterling returned to the Island at 3:45 we moved scaffold planking out to the Peerless in a very heavy SE wind which is dangerous.  The line to the wet anchor must be replaced due to fraying.  The masons  made excellent progress today and only about 4 hours work remains in the basement.  Both chimneys are now complete.  Bill repaired the vent in the south wall used with a stove.  He also cleaned up all the lower edges of the building.  The basement windows are complete except one.  The east entrance is done also.  Total hours today 16.

October 12, 2000.  Mike Goodwin, Joe Sholzes, Mike Sterling and Bob Trelford went to the Island.  Mike Goodwin painted the cap stones on the gable ends with whitewash.  These are distinctive and are raised 4" above the roof line.  They are the key feature of the roof as designed by John Brown.  The Keeper's Quarters at both Point Clark and Cove Island have been fitted with a "modern roof".  This  destroys this look of the structure.  Ours is now perfectly restored.  From the land in the sun you can see the shadow cast by them with good field glasses.  It is very distinctive when on the Island.  Mike Goodwin also installed a thin wire from chimney to chimney on the roof.  This will keep the gulls off the roof peak.  Joe, Mike Sterling and Bob Trelford also did extensive brush clearing from the north-east side of the approach to the Keeper's Quarters.  The clearing that was done in June has resulted in the growth of beautiful ground cover and wild flowers.  We also collected more plastic refuse and debris and brought it back.  Mike Sterling worked on some national archive material in the afternoon.  These amounted to just hints of funds allocated to John Brown on other projects.  Total hours: 15.

October 13th, 2000   Bill Moulton, Bob Trelford, Chuck Jonas, Mike Sterling, Bill Fitzgerald, and Kerry Kitchenham from the museum were the Island visitors.  We spent a lot of time clearing brush and lilacs from directly in front of the house.  We found two old flower beds and cleared them of debris.  Bill Fitzgerald the archeologist did some more surveying. He looked in the area of large boulders that is south of the house.  He found some old china under the rocks. It has a German crest that he has seen before.  He has also found some old barrel stays under this area indicating that it was placed there rather than random placement by nature.  This is the area that I located on the old map that indicates boulders are to be placed in order to stop erosion. See note 12 on the map.  Bill also noticed some lilacs growing on the high ridge south of the house some distance.  He tell us he found an old map at the museum that shows a building there north of the mysterious south building.  He will excavate.  Lilacs do not germinate by seed, but spread by root expansion.  So this clump must have been planted in the area of the building.  He found evidence of its existence.

Bob Trelford and I went to see Ray Fenton and picked up the upstairs window frames and the basement frames.  Ray is almost done with the door frames and downstairs window frames.  Wonderful work.  Bob and I then took down some flags on the bridge.  Total hours today:  22.

October 18th, 2000.  Bob Trelford, Bill Moulton, Joe Scholzes and Mike Sterling worked on setting in place the window frames constructed by Ray Fenton.  We were able to put in place the two upstairs window frames, the 3 first floor frames, one basement frame and the two doors on the first floor.  The doors will be interesting in that they will have a rectangular window on the frame above the door to the outside.  The frames fit very well in the reconstructed Keeper's house which just recently was a complete and utter ruin.  We used shims and foam to hold the frames.  We had no difficulty.  Tomorrow we will use mortar to fix the frames in a permanent manner.  Total hours 16.

October 19th, 2000.  Bob Trelford and Mike Sterling continue to work on the window and door frames.  Today we applied mortar to the basement windows and to the second floor windows.  We also completed the first floor doors and windows.  We had to trim and fit the basement windows.  They are now ready for windows which should arrive in a week or so.  Total Hours 10.

November 6th, 2000.  Bob Trelford and Mike Sterling continue to work on the house.  Bob installs the basement window sashes in the frames.  Mike continues to point the stone on the interior of the "Great Room" in the house.  The pointing includes work around the 24 foot ceiling joists.  Also, each wall has a horizontal board about every 3 feet from top to bottom.  Some of these were rotted out due to neglect.  We are replacing all the rotted ones and placing them in a concrete "bed".  When this is done, they are mortared in using a pointing tool.   Bob Chapman does some painting and sanding of the ceilings and walls. Total hours 24.

November 19th to November 28th, 2000.  The weather was terrible with howling winds, snow flurries and cold.  We could not do much, but prepare the trailer for pulling the Peerless and do some final sanding on the windows.  We should note that the 200 hours and more that John Rigby has spent on the extensive accounting and bill paying has not been noted in this journal so far.  Each time an expenditure is made or a donation is received John has to process it with the town and note it in his accounting journal.  We will accumulate these hours now.  Total hours 220.

November 29th, 2000.  The weather has been terrible and very cold.  We have been unable to get to the Island.  Today was not so bad.  It was about 0 C and a medium wind from the north.  Bob Trelford and Mike Sterling used the Tillbury and ran it down to the Long Dock.  There we loaded on the windows for the Keeper's quarters that were made by Ray Fenton.  We had trouble with the 9.5 HP engine due to a bad load of gas.  After sputtering down to the Long Dock we managed to load there and head for the Island.  We quit a couple of times, but managed to gain a land fall.  The windows went in very well.  The windows in the loft are single hung while the 3 on the first floor are double hung.  They all were put in place with a minimum of trimming.  They fit the frames well.  The two external doors had been worked on before and fit well in place.  We nailed in supports and closed the house in from the inside.  We exited by a basement window, boarded that up leaving its window inside.  The area was made secure and clean and we put a new load of gas in the can and headed home uneventfully. If we do not return until spring we have done what we started out to do this year. Total hours 12.

December 1st, 2000.  We took the Peerless out of the water this morning.  This was done in conjunction with 3 large fishing boats (e.g. Little Snick and the Gav-N-Jim).  Working this  morning were Bob Trelford, John Rigby, Mike and Doug Huber, Jim and Ray McLay.  Total hours 18.

December 10th, 2000.  We have had terrible weather for working.  The Peerless is out of the water and only our trusted Tillbury remained in the Saugeen.  Since it has been very cold and we have had a lot of snow, it has been impossible to get this boat out of the water.  Today Bob Trelford, Mike Sterling and Jim McLay prepared it for removal from the river.  Bill Jackson volunteered to pull it out with the winch on his truck.  We tried to remove the ice from around the water line and moved it toward the mouth of the river.  We also took removed the snow from it.  Bob, Jim and Mike moved the trailer to the docks for Bill.  We will paint the Tillbury and repair some gashes, bumps and bruises on it.

December 20th, 2000.  We had a gathering of Chantry Island Supporters at the Walker house for "grog and cheese".  It was attended by over 80 stalwarts who still remained in the area and who still could fight the weather to attend.  Thanks to all for a magic year.
